About This Course

This program is designed to develop the participant’s ability to understand, inspect, test, diagnose, and troubleshoot electrical and electronic systems used in heavy equipment.

The course moves progressively from basic electrical principles to machine-level diagnostic thinking, allowing trainees to work more effectively with modern machines that use:

  • Electrical power distribution
  • Starting and charging systems
  • Sensors and actuators
  • Electronic control modules (ECMs)
  • CAN/J1939 communication networks
  • Operator control systems
  • Safety interlocks and warning systems

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Explain the fundamental electrical principles used in heavy equipment systems.
2. Read and interpret OEM electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
3. Identify the function of major electrical and electronic components used in heavy equipment.
4. Safely use electrical test instruments such as a digital multimeter and clamp meter.
5. Diagnose common electrical faults including:
6. Diagnose and test batteries, starting systems, and charging systems.
7. Understand sensor and actuator operation in machine control systems.
8. Understand ECM inputs, outputs, and diagnostic fault logic.
9. Diagnose basic CAN/J1939 communication issues.
10. Apply a structured troubleshooting process to real machine faults.
11. Perform preventive inspection and electrical system checks with better technical judgment.

Curriculum

30h

Electrical Fundamentals for Heavy Equipment

Build a correct technical foundation in electrical principles used in heavy equipment systems and prepare trainees for real diagnostic work.

Electrical Safety, Measuring Instruments & Test Practice

Enable trainees to work safely and confidently with electrical test equipment used in heavy equipment service and diagnostics.

Electrical Architecture, Schematics & Machine Layout

Help trainees understand how electrical systems are physically and logically arranged on different heavy equipment platforms.

Batteries, Power Supply, Starting & Charging Systems

Develop the trainee’s ability to inspect, test, and diagnose the main electrical power supply systems of heavy equipment.

Circuit Protection, Harnesses, Connectors & Voltage Drop

Teach participants how current is protected, routed, and lost across heavy equipment wiring systems.

Sensors, Actuators & Machine Input/Output Control

Enable trainees to understand how machine electronic control depends on sensor inputs and actuator outputs.

ECMs, Electronic Control & Diagnostic Logic

Provide a practical understanding of how electronic control modules manage machine systems and how faults should be diagnosed logically.

CAN Bus / J1939 Communication Systems

Develop a practical understanding of machine communication networks and the most common communication failures in the field.

Operator Controls, Safety Circuits, Warning & Auxiliary Systems

Explain how operator inputs, machine interlocks, displays, and auxiliary systems interact electrically and electronically.

Machine-Specific Electrical Systems & Systematic

Integrate all previous modules into machine-specific fault analysis and structured troubleshooting practice.
